๐—•๐—ฅ๐—ข๐—ข๐—ž๐—™๐—ข๐—ฅ๐——, ๐—ก.๐—–. | The Town of Brookford is proud to announce that Chief of Police Willie Armstrong has graduated from Session 25 of the Department of Homeland Security Leadership Academy (DHSLA), following two weeks of intensive executive-level leadership training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) in Glynco, Georgia. Armstrong was nominated for the program and selected to attend Session 25, joining law enforcement and public safety leaders from agencies across the United States. The Department of Homeland Security Leadership Academy provides advanced leadership development for law enforcement executives and command-level professionals. The program brings together leaders from across the country to study contemporary challenges facing public safety organizations while strengthening the leadership skills necessary to guide agencies and communities through increasingly complex environments.

Throughout the academy, Armstrong participated in advanced instruction and discussions addressing topics including ethical decision-making, crisis and adaptive leadership, emotional intelligence, organizational culture, critical thinking, officer wellness, public information, critical incident response, and other issues facing todayโ€™s public safety leaders.

An important component of the academy is the opportunity for participants to learn from one another. Armstrong worked alongside police chiefs, sheriffs, command staff, instructors, and other public safety professionals from across the country, allowing participants to exchange experiences, examine different approaches to leadership, and develop professional relationships that extend beyond the academy.

โ€œI am extremely grateful for the opportunity to have been nominated, selected, and ultimately graduate from the Department of Homeland Security Leadership Academy,โ€ Armstrong said. โ€œRepresenting the Town of Brookford in a national program like this is something I do not take lightly. I had the opportunity to learn alongside outstanding public safety leaders from across the country, hear their experiences, share our own, and build relationships that I believe will continue long after graduation.โ€

Armstrong said the experience reinforced his belief that leadership requires a continuing commitment to education and personal growth.

โ€œReaching a leadership position should never mean that you stop learning,โ€ Armstrong said. โ€œIt creates an even greater responsibility to continue developing yourself so that you can better develop your organization and the people you serve. I look forward to bringing what I have learned back to Brookford and applying those lessons as we continue strengthening our department and preparing for the future.โ€

Armstrong also emphasized the significance of representing a small community on a national stage.

โ€œBrookford may be a small town, but the size of our community does not determine the quality of leadership, professionalism, or service our residents deserve,โ€ Armstrong said. โ€œI am proud every time I have the opportunity to carry Brookfordโ€™s name outside of our community, and I am even more grateful when I can return with new knowledge, new relationships, and new ideas that can help us move forward.โ€ The Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers, a component of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, provides training and professional development supporting federal, state, local, tribal, territorial, and other law enforcement partners.

Armstrong officially graduated from Department of Homeland Security Leadership Academy Session 25 on September 25, 2026.

Brookford Awarded PARTF Grant for Major Community Park Improvements

A New Place to Play, Gather and Grow Is Coming to Brookford

The Town of Brookford is proud to announce that it has been awarded funding through North Carolina's Parks and Recreation Trust Fund to support the development of a new and improved community park.

This award represents a major step forward for Brookford and the culmination of extensive planning, collaboration and hard work. The Town has listened to residents who want more recreational opportunities, improved public spaces and amenities that strengthen the quality of life in our community.

Planned improvements include:

  • A new picnic shelter for family gatherings, celebrations and community events
  • A new walking trail that will provide residents with a place to exercise and enjoy the outdoors
  • A new playground where children can safely play and explore
  • Renovation of the existing basketball court
  • Renovation of the concession stand to better support recreational activities and community events

These improvements will transform the park into a more welcoming, functional and enjoyable destination for residents of all ages. It will be a place where children can play, families can gather, neighbors can connect and the Brookford community can create lasting memories together.

"This is more than an investment in a park. It is an investment in our families, our children and the future of Brookford. We have worked extremely hard to reach this point, and we are excited to begin transforming this vision into something our entire community can enjoy and be proud of."

Brookford's project was selected during a highly competitive statewide grant cycle. The North Carolina Parks and Recreation Authority received 42 applications requesting more than $15 million. Only 25 local projects were selected to share the $9.8 million available through this year's local grant program.

The Town extends its sincere appreciation to the Western Piedmont Council of Governments for its valuable guidance and assistance throughout the planning and grant-application process. Brookford also thanks the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Authority, the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund, NC State Parks, the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation, and the Recreation Resources Service team for their expertise, dedication and investment in communities across North Carolina.

The Town also thanks Brookford's residents. Their ideas, encouragement and continued belief in the community helped shape the vision behind this project.

The next phase will include completing the official grant agreement and advancing the park's planning and design. In accordance with grant requirements, no project work will begin until the agreement has been fully executed. The official project period is scheduled to run from November 1, 2026, through October 31, 2029.

Additional information about the park's final design, development schedule and opportunities for community involvement will be shared as the project progresses.

Brookford may be a small town, but this achievement demonstrates what is possible when a community works together with a clear vision for its future.

Brookford is getting a new park, and this is only the beginning.

Big heart. Strong current.
